About

As a writer, I naturally narrate this, but this page is also available in web-friendly bullet points.

Words have always been an important part of my life, but it was in college that my love for them developed into a career path. I received a B.A. in Communication Studies with an emphasis in rhetorical studies and a minor in English from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. While at Puget Sound, I worked part time in the Office of Communications, writing and editing university publications, which complemented my academic study of language with a practical counterpart.

For two years, I served as Writer and Web Specialist for APA - The Engineered Wood Association, a non-profit trade association for manufacturers of engineered wood products. While at APA, I wrote new and edited existing marketing and technical publications for a wide variety of audiences, including engineers, architects, builders, building inspectors, and homeowners. I also served as content manager for their website, www.apawood.org. In this capacity, I oversaw the development of new sites related to particular promotions and worked with new technologies, including electronic newsletters, blogs, and RSS feeds, to enhance APA's online presence. I also honed my editing skills by taking night classes at the University of Washington and received my Professional Certificate in Editing in 2006.

Looking to further my education on web communications, I returned to school to pursue my M.A. in Communication, Culture, and Technology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. My studies focused on cultural expression in online spaces (especially in sports fandom) and the impact of technology on copyright law. I graduated from the program with distinction in May 2008.

While at Georgetown, I worked part time as the editor of Georgetown College Research News, an online magazine devoted to the research work and pedagogy of the science faculty at Georgetown College. In this position, I oversaw a staff of associate editors, a videographer, and a photographer to produce monthly issues explaining scientific research to a lay audience. I managed the daily operations of the magazine as well as wrote, edited, and uploaded all content to the site.

I currently am a campaigner for Care2.com's PetitionSite, where I help nonprofit organizations with online advocacy on progressive issues like politics, the enviornment, and human rights. I also blog for Care2's cause channels, explaining in greater detail why sending letters to decision makers about specific issues really can make a difference.
